Are you struggling with weight regain after bariatric surgery?

Are you struggling with weight regain after bariatric surgery?

Bariatric surgery can be life-changing, but maintaining weight loss long-term can be challenging. If you're experiencing weight regain, know that you're not alone, and this doesn’t mean you’ve failed. Many people feel worried about weight spiralling out of control again which we've written more about in another article

It’s common to regain some weight as your body adjusts to the surgery, and over time, old habits can creep back in. Changes in your health or medication may also contribute. But the good news is, by recognising this, you're already on the right path.

Why Weight Re-Gain Happens

The reasons behind weight regain are often a combination of the body adapting to surgery and drifting away from the positive habits you established in the early days. Remember, weight loss surgery is a tool, but it’s up to you to work with it.

It's easy to fall into the trap of dieting, but consider this: you may have had surgery because dieting hadn’t worked for you in the past. This means it’s important to avoid getting stuck in the ‘on/off’ cycle of dieting. The key is finding a sustainable approach that works with your surgery.

The 4 Pillars of Weight Loss Surgery

To help you maximise the benefits of your surgery, we focus on these four areas.

By revisiting the basics in these areas, you can create a structured plan for yourself. But don’t overwhelm yourself by trying to tackle everything at once.

Focus on One Change at a Time

If you try to make too many changes all at once, it will be difficult to know what's actually working. Take it slow and set a small, achievable goal. For example, you might start by increasing your fluid intake or refocusing on protein with each meal. Identify the barriers you’re facing and figure out what you can influence and what you need to accept.

If you’re feeling overwhelmed, don’t hesitate to talk to someone about it. Whether it’s a friend, a family member, someone who’s been through surgery, or a professional, having support is invaluable.
