Consultant Upper GI and Bariatric Surgeon
Mr Hewes is Clinical Director for Gastrointestinal Surgery and Head of the Weight Management and Bariatric Surgery Unit at North Bristol NHS Trust.
Mr Hewes provides outstanding care in the following procedures:
Weight loss surgery
Laparoscopic and Robotic Gastric Bypass, Sleeve Gastrectomy, Gastric Banding and Gastric Balloons including the Allurion System.
He is also an experienced surgeon in complex revisional (re-do) bariatric surgery.
Only experienced, fully trained Bariatric Surgeons should perform weight loss surgery. Together with Mr Osborne they have an expert team in Bristol and an interest in safety in the operating theatre and excellence in outcomes. They regularly supervise other surgeons and run training courses for teams from other hospitals. The team are actively involved in the expanding research portfolio at North Bristol NHS Trust. We are a recruiting centre for the largest surgical randomised controlled trial in Bariatric Surgery (By-Band-Sleeve).

Mr Hewes has had a broad Surgical training. He was brought up in Oxfordshire before qualifying from Sheffield University Medical School in 1995. He spent the early years of his training in Australia and London. He was awarded the degree of Doctor of Medicine (MD) in 2006 investigating liver cancer. His specialist training was concentrated in the South East and he undertook a specialist Bariatric fellowship at UCLH. He moved to Bristol and took up his substantive consultant position in 2012.
Outside work most of his time is spent with his family, dog, bike and guitar.
